Lose An Hour, Gain An Hour?

As everyone knows, we sprang forward this weekend.  And it hurt.  But, that’s what happens when you’re still awake at two a.m., socializing and playing Settlers of Catan with friends (it’s quite possible we didn’t get to bed until around 5 this morning…….but if that were true I definitely wouldn’t admit it!).

The morning end of this change is not great; it means it’s a bit darker in the mornings for awhile.

On the evening end, though, it feels like we’ve won more weekend.  We can push back evening feeding an hour or two, making the overnight stretch between feedings shorter.

Despite our lack of a full night’s sleep, Paul found inspiration and energy to get outside and do some yard work (which is very, very sorely needed right now!), and Oona kept him busy playing with her in between chores.  Having the gift of  a very warm day certainly helped.

Orzo and the other dogs were enjoying the sun and warmth as well.  He is turning out to be the same kind of perpetual happy that defines his half-sister, Sabine.

We even spied some daffodil bulbs starting to push up!  I got some ranunculus bulbs to plant in there this spring, and I submitted my order to Baker Creek for our gardens this spring.  We’re due for a decent gardening season, right???

Last year’s lambs have gotten big! Rosamund back there is almost as big as Cosmo now.

Another Glorious Snow Day

We got several inches of snow yesterday and Paul’s office was closed, so I declared an actual snow day for the kids.  Normally we have school no matter what the weather, but it looked so blizzardy, and inside was so cozy with the fireplace (and having Paul home throws off our routine anyway), so I let everyone curl up under their blankets and just relax all day.

It worked out well for me; I got the front right half of my Shepherd sweater done!

It worked out well for Gulliver, as well – he had Paul’s lap all day.

No one, though, seemed to enjoy the snow more than Gnocchi.

He  had his goofy self a grand time while the snow fell.

While Cosmo and the smallest lambs enjoyed the dryness of the shelter with a few chicken friends and the pigs.

But, the day that had begun so snowy and stormy finished out sunny, and they all came out to enjoy some hay.

It’s hard to believe that two days ago it was 73 degrees, and that a few weeks from now is the first day of spring.  It’s still rather frigid outside and the snow has not begun to melt yet.  Soon enough it will, though, and we will be installing a heat lamp into the big chicken coop for the arrival next week of our ducklings!  Winter may have some life left in it, but spring is nearly upon us!

Hey Hey, It’s A Snow Day! (Photo Heavy!)

So far at the farm we’ve got 8 inches, and we’re expecting another one or two before it’s all over.  I took the break between snowfalls to take pictures of everyone outside.

There’s plenty of shelter, hay and fresh water for all of them, so we are all able to relax a bit and enjoy the snow.

It’s especially nice when we start our day with a recipe from the always wonderful Smitten Kitchen!  This is baked eggs ranchero from her book.  The eggs came from our chickens, who have started laying again now that the days are getting longer.

What I’ve Been Doing (Instead of Blogging)

Oh, my poor neglected blog.  I’ve been lazy with you.

I’ve no real excuse except that it’s winter and I’d really just like to burrow for a bit.

It’s getting to be mid-winter here, though, and we’ve been checking the chicken coops and replenishing bedding and doing minor cleaning in them.  We’ll do a total clean out come spring, but we want them to have enough clean space to get through until then.

With Francis out hopefully breeding all our ewes I’ve also been spending some of this time taking stock of our farm supplies, organizing them,  and making lists of what we’ll need for lambing in May.  The ladies will need a good de-worming before then and hooves will have to be in proper order.

I’ve also been looking at seed catalogs and dreaming up planting schedules and new ideas for the next growing season (which hopefully will be much kinder than last year’s monsoon-a-palooza).

School is being done at a leisurely pace these days (all day, sometimes by the fire), and knitting is getting accomplished along side of it.

It’s winter. It’s a good time for indoor projects and eating comfort foods.

Snow Comes to The Farm

A few days ago we got happy reports of potential snow for our area, and started making preparations in case we got hit.  Projections were for 6 inches or so, and though Paul was very unenthusiastic and grumbly about the idea of snow, he helped me get the farm in order so that we could actually enjoy it from indoors, unlike last year when we spent an entire storm outside trying to keep everyone dry.

But I digress.

The snow was not expected until late morning, so after we made sure all of the water troughs were full (and the tank heater working), we got busy delivering extra hay to both paddocks.

Once that was complete I made sure the dogs were in where they could access the bigger shelters and Paul cleared space for the tractor in the garage.  Then we went inside and I got the kids working on their schoolwork while we waited for the snow (no sense cancelling school for home-schooled kids when there is no snow actually out there to play with!).

We waited.  And waited.  And waited some more.

Susan teased me with pictures of lovely white snowfall in northern Virginia, and we heard reports of plenty of the white stuff just to our west.

Some time after noon we started seeing some snow “drizzle” and then our weather reports changed.  We would now see around two inches total.

Needless to say, the kids and I were very, very disappointed.

Fortunately by around evening feeding time the snow began to pick up and we say some actual accumulation on the ground.

Everyone was fairly unfazed by it, and focused more on FOOD!

Though not much snow had fallen we double-checked on everyone’s hay and water levels and made sure the chickens were tucked away safely for the night.

Happily, we did get at least an inch, and the next morning dawned super bright and cold.

The water tank without the heater had to have the ice broken up.

Aside from that, everyone was rather unfazed and unimpressed.

The pigs and the little ones were content to remain in their shelter with the hay until I brought their grain.

Only the ducks seemed confused; they’re the only animals here that hadn’t seen snow before.  They weren’t sure if they should eat it or nest in it.

Although we’re still disappointed we haven’t seen a really good snowstorm, I’m glad we at least got some taste of winter.  It’s such a lovely and welcome break from the rain and mud!

Cold Snap

While the northeast has been getting hammered with snow, we’ve been dealing with rain, sleet, wind and cold.  Normally here in central Virginia we don’t get a lot of the arctic temperatures I was accustomed to growing up in northern New York State, but occasionally it gets down into the twenties, and even more rarely, the teens.  After a full two days of rain, which made the ground a muddy, sodden mess, we got sleet, which made it an icy, sodden mess, followed by cold and wind, which froze everything solid.

See how the mud froze?  The deep ruts from the tractor are pretty bad.  It caused a lot of problems trying to get the gates open, as the mud around the bottom is frozen in this very uneven pattern.

Fortunately, we have a tank heater in the water trough for the flock, so their water never freezes, as long as it is full.

Unfortunately, the water lines out to the trough are frozen.  But, the flock needs water, frozen lines or no, so Paul came up with the solution to fill up buckets up at the house, put lids on them, and drive them down to the flock in the tractor.

It took ten buckets to fill the trough and the water bucket for Lucy and Orzo (who are in a separate pen they can’t escape from and terrorize the neighborhood).  We’ll have to do this at least once, if not twice, a day until the temperatures come back up.

The water in the pig pen has not frozen because it sits up against the house and the faucet there has (so far) been fine.  We’ve put the littlest lambs up there with the pigs (both for extra grain, extra shelter in the pig shed, and so that Mr Francis doesn’t breed any little girls that aren’t ready yet).

They’ve been getting square bales of hay inside the shed, and the pigs have spread it all around in there to make a nest for everyone.

Did you know pigs make nests?  I never did.

As for the rest of the flock, I hadn’t spent much time before worrying about shelter because adult sheep and goats can generally handle the cold fairly well.  It’s the ice rain we’ve been plagued with that’s been the trouble.  The Angora goats aren’t tolerating it all that well, so Susan decided to order some calf hutches for them.

The sheep have shown no interest in them at all.

I feel a lot better about the flock’s situation now, especially as we’re expecting more sleet tomorrow. Is it any wonder I’ve been feeling unwell?

Once the flock was squared away today I made a big pot of Susan’s Garlic Chicken Soup. That’ll keep us warm for the night.

Holiday Time-Out

Lately I’ve been throwing myself into baking and prep for Christmas, as I do every year.  Every year I whip up a massive amount of food and goodies so that everyone can have a relaxing, magical holiday.  Because do you remember how that felt as a child?  When the holidays were magical?

I want that magic again, I really do.  But sometimes, it is really, really difficult to make it happen.

My kids have been steamrolling toward the holiday with a kind of manic, no-holds-barred, all-out war on peace and sanity.  The younger two have been at each others’ throats at a rate previously unseen.  Warm holiday moments with the family have become something akin to forced labor as I try to drag them through holiday activities kicking, screaming and hurling insults all the way. My dire warnings about naughty kids who get no presents have fallen mostly on deaf ears. I think Neve suspects where her bread is buttered, and further knows I’ll never ruin Christmas just to teach those jerks a lesson, and Oona is simply following suit.

How I get around that one without actually cancelling the presents…..I haven’t got that figured out yet.

Fortunately, I have seem to instilled in them the joy of giving.  For two weeks they’ve been collecting things from their own bedrooms and wrapping them up to give to one another, and to people they know. It’s lovely, but it’s also aggravating when your six year old wants to gift a lovely stuffed animal you paid good money for to the dog (or worse, one you made). But they do genuinely enjoy making things for each other and their friends and family.

The past few weeks, therefor, have been a rather mixed bag for me. There’s been the goodness of having friends over more nights than not, and there have been some quiet moments in the evening where everyone is entranced by a Christmas movie and snuggled together on the couch.

Today, though, I realized I was headed toward a low point.  I was wrestling with the problem that my younger kids don’t necessarily need to be rewarded for their deplorable behavior, but that I don’t want Christmas to be sad.  I was feeling bummed out by the weather; upper 70’s and pouring.  I had to deal with nasty mud and flies and just general wet-weather grossness while feeding the animals.  Plus my head was aching from the rain, and I had myself set to make three different batches of cookies.

Baking, you see, is how I express my holiday joy and attempt to regain some of that magic.

So Paul took the girls to their Scouts event so I could get to work (they sang carols and did crafts with the residents of a nursing home).

Immediately I realized I had to go to the store, as I was perilously low on butter and dishwasher detergent.  Off I trudged to deal with the Sunday-before-Christmas grocery store crowds.  I got what I needed, came home and set about getting the dishwasher loaded up to make room for baking. And realized I had forgotten the dishwasher detergent.

No big deal!  I whipped up a batch of dough that had to chill before baking, and headed back out.

I had now wasted over an hour just running around, and soon it would be evening feeding time.

I grabbed the dough from the fridge and rolled it out to cut with my Springerle mold.

Lo and behold….I couldn’t get the dough to NOT stick to the mold.  I chilled it again while working on some butter dough for Linzer cookies and got some advice from a friend.

Back to the Springerle dough.  Still sticky, even though I had added flour and chilled it and now it was next to impossible to roll out.

But I persevered!  I would have a batch of cookies finished, damn it!

Finally I discovered that I needed to keep the dough a little thicker than I had, and the mold worked like a charm.  For a few.  Then it got sticky again.  So I went to my butter dough since I’ve worked with that millions of times and never had an issue.  I really needed a win, here.

It, too, was waaaaay sticky.  And then it hit me: humidity.  It was massively humid outside, and not much better in.

Once I adjusted the flour more, I had success all around.

But it was feeding time and I was fast losing steam.

I texted Paul to see if he’d bring me home a Gingerbread Latte. When he said yes, I headed out the door into the rain, mud and poo, some of the spring restored to my step.

I returned to the house ravenous.  The rotisserie chicken I had picked up for dinner mocked me with its deliciousness from the kitchen counter, and I ate all of the skin off of it.  Still, I wanted more.  But Paul and the kids were in town, and this was supposed to be dinner.

Two wings and part of a breast later, I got back to work with the cookies.  I was disappointed with how little I’d accomplished for the day and my feet were aching.  The one thing pushing me to finish using up all the fresh dough in front of me and getting it all baked was the thought of that beautiful, luxurious latte I’d be getting soon.

By the time Paul did get back, I was starving again, my head was hurting again, my feet and back were aching, I was tired, cranky, and it was nearly 8:00.  I barely had one plate of cookies finished and it felt like so very little for how hard I’d been working.

When Neve walked in the door holding my coffee, it was like the heavens had parted and all would be well.  This would be a wonderful night of accomplishment and snacking.

And then Pippa ran to Neve, jumped on her, and knocked my beautiful latte to the floor.

It splashed and pooled all over the kitchen floor, its heavenly aroma assaulting me with the cruelty of knowing it was not to be.

Then the knowledge that I would have to clean it up.

I cried. Big, ugly ears.

Tears for my lost promise of a salvaged evening.  Tears for my frustration with my family.  Tears for the crappy weather and my headache.  Tears of exhaustion.  Angry tears.

I was on full-scale meltdown and I needed a time-out.

But then?

I went back to baking and knocked out two different batches of cookies.

Sometimes it all gets to be too much and I wonder why I do this to myself.  Then my day goes to crud and I realize I do it because I love it.  I love baking.  I love Christmas.  I love my terrible family.

I do it for love.

It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like…Solstice?

It feels more like the Vernal Equinox, though.  While I’ve ensconced myself in the kitchen baking Christmas goodies and listening to carols, outside it’s tee-shirt weather.

Even the flies are back.

We even decided to nix the bonfire because I didn’t feel like sweating by a fire outside.

Not that the goats or chickens are complaining.  Or my husband.  Or most of my friends.

But Emily came in from locking up the coops tonight and exclaimed “Alright! It’s too darn warm out there!”

I agree.  It should be blissfully snowy and wintry and Christmas-y out there.

I remember many years ago when we were first married I was watching The Jeff Foxworthy Show (I only had like 3 channels, don’t judge!) and they aired a Christmas episode wherein the wife was super bummed-out because they lived in the South and she missed having a white Christmas.  And I very clearly remember thinking “That poor woman.  I will NEVER allow myself to suffer such a thing by moving SOUTH of all places!”

And yet….here we are.

Sigh.

So I will continue to bake and prep for the big day and try to fool myself into thinking it’s wintry out there, and ignore the thunderstorms we are supposed to get tomorrow.

Today is once again Solstice, and we will light candles and lift our glasses to the return of the light and the promise of spring (even if I don’t feel particularly springy right now), and enjoy snuggling sweet wooly creatures.
